Susan Madu - Calendar Block Sampler Quilt, Block of The Month

We are excited to have the opportunity to quilt with Susan Madu every month for the year 2021.  Susan Madu is a CPA by day and a passionate creator and quilter by night. Susan has been quilting for over 25 years and garment sewing since she could reach up to a sewing machine. Susan is never without a sketchbook or some project in her hands.

Her quilting has evolved from making quilts from commercial patterns to designing her own patterns under the Modern

Blended Quilts banner.  Susan's patterns appeal to both traditional and modern quilters alike. A central theme of Susan's

patterns is blending together elements of traditional and modern quilting.

In this Block of The Month Class, we will be focusing on a different calendar sampler block each month.  Class supplies will be distributed well in advance of each class so participants can be prepared.  Instruction will be held over Zoom and a zoom link will be sent via e-mail prior to each class.  Payments for classes will be due prior to instruction and will be taken on a monthly basis (If you want to pay upfront for the whole year, please let us know).    

The quilt is a monthly sampler with a traditional layout. There are 12 – 16” square blocks with 4 - 10” x 12” filler

blocks. The quilt is 58” x 64”. The quilt can also be a bed runner that is 30” x 90” using only the 12 – 16”

blocks or a monthly calendar by quilting and binding the 12 – 16” blocks and mounting the individual

blocks on a 15 1⁄2” x 28 1⁄2” base. Each block demonstrates a different quilting technique, building a quilter’s toolkit of skills.  We will be working to build your skills progressively. 

Several of the blocks are designed to use the Studio 180 Design Tools: Quilter’s Magic Wand, Tucker Trimmer, Wing

Clipper I, Square2, Corner Pop, and Split Rects. These tools are part of a quilter’s essential toolkit.

The color scheme for the quilt is two solids – a background color and accent color with fat quarters of

coordinating prints.  Each month, one 16” block will be constructed using a new technique.

For two months, 2 – 10” x 16” filler blocks will also be constructed.  A picture of the full quilt we will be making will be sent via e-mail after registration and watch for pictures and more info on our facebook page and newsletter.

If you miss the monthly class, we will be recording the class and you will have access to it via a registered student website for the entire month following the class.  The link will be sent via e-mail for everything, so keep yours eyes on your e-mail. 

** Rulers, fabric, notions etc... are available through Dragons Heart Quilt Shop. Registration to this event, is an 11 month commitment February thru December of 2021 and payment for classes must be made prior to each monthly class. A Credit Card will be required to be on file to secure your registration and spot in class.
